Why Portraits?

Unsold Roses - oil on canvas

Portrait and figurative art of all kinds move me.  The concentration as you may guess is enormous when painting a portrait.  My subject’s world becomes my world or is it my world that becomes their world.  In one way or the other our lives do inter-connect throughout the creation of an art piece .

The creation of this painting
“Unsold Roses” was inspired by my many years in sales.

When do you call yourself an artist?

January 11th, 2010

We all have a story about how we started to paint, what inspired us, where and what we paint, are passion about the arts.  I could go on and on.
How about…  when should one call themselves an artist?  Surprisingly, I’ve had many people ask me this question during my exhibitions.

Do I call myself an artist because I’ve spend many hours working in creating art?  Do I wait until I’ve had a few exhibitions?  Or until someone calls me an artist… public, media, friends etc  Why was this question so important?

The first time I heard someone refer to me as an artist, I was ecstatic.  It just made my day hearing it from someone other than a friend or family member.

It took me years before I could consider myself  an artist.

The  answer to this simple question?
It’s just a word… in our hearts and souls, we are all artists.

Stay connected in my world… the art world

Oil Painting on Canvas

Oil Painting on Canvas

I began as a self taught  artist  in 2004 and currently continue to create works of art for exhibitions and commission.  In 2004 my main focus was portraits;  I gradualy started painting  landscapes, animals, and figurative art as the requests were coming from patrons.

My life as an artist was evolving  as were the subjects.

Art is a never ending learning process; each subject/project is a new adventure with a challenge which drives one to continue.

I’ve always loved the arts from the time I could remember.  I was fascinated by the drawings found in everyday life… the many books I’ve had the opportunity to read and look through, including the simple colouring books I adored as a child.

Early in my life, I chose a different career path due to circumstances that led me to believed I would not be able to provide a desirable income in the arts.   True or not,  life has many twists and turns and here I am writing about my experiences as an artist … my art world.

Keep connected… more to come.
